Common Knowledge Trust has started a dialogue with an amazing clinic
in Nigeria. Together we hope write and produce some simple to use Pink
Kit resources for women in that country. These resources would be given
to a trial of women to learn themselves during pregnancy.
Only 40% of women in Nigeria are literate so our modern Pink Kit Package would not be appropriate.
Common Knowledge Trust (http://www.commonknowledgetrust.com)
has always wanted to work in less developed countries. We hope to
produce a prototype resource that could be translated into their 272
languages.
We'll let you know as the project advances.

Feb 6, 2008
The Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board in New Zealand has
decided to do a 2 year study of The Pink Kit Package by loaning one to
every couple who attends the hospital ante-natal class. These couples
will be encouraged to learn the Pink Kit skills on their own, using The
Pink Kit Package as their own private teacher.
They will be given the Pink Kit Package at the first of six classes
... to be returned after their birth. Surveys and statistics will be
gathered.
Anoushka who will be teaching the classes will also give six
10minute experience samples from each of the Pink Kit resources inside
the PK Package so families can recognize how simple-to-learn these
skills are. And she will encourage them to learn skills along with
making Birth Plans.
This study will be coupled with a study through Otago University.
Anne Cockerill is doing a Master's Thesis through the Psychology and
Psych Medical Depts on the benefits of The Pink Kit skills. Her
advisers are looking at:
-
It's acceptability by the mainstream population (that's simple since these skills evolved from ordinary people).
-
Benefits for women with chronic illnesses and disabilities (this is
simple as well since so many pregnant women with disabilities/illnesses
use the skills along with whatever medical care they require).
-
How The Pink Kit skills increase a birthing woman and coaching dad's
(or other) awareness (gosh, this is simple too since the skills give
families the tools to work through the activity of childbirth ... from
natural births to elective cesarean deliveries. Childbirth is always an
activity).
-
The benefit to fathers (Pink Kit skills change the world for one man at a time. Finally fathers really know how to help!)
This is exciting news. Andrea (the midwife who has collected Pink
Kit statistics for 8 years met yesterday with the DHB who was
incredibly impressed by the statistics and the message to consumers ...
'learn the skills yourself ... come to your birth with skills to use'.
The District Health Board immediately saw the benefit of increasing
self responsibility in maternity care.
Andrea next meets with the New Zealand Midwifery National Council
the end of February. She sits on the Council for the Nelson/Marlborough
region. She hopes to inspire more of her colleagues to grow a skilled
birthing population.
How exciting that you are about to join other families with Pink Kit
birth and coaching skills. When you purchase The Pink Kit Package you
will dive into childbirth skills during your pregnancy that will build
your confidence, self-assurance and ability.

Womans Day 26.September 2005
Petra's Baby Boy - Jude's birth was full of surprises
Although home birth is not a new phenomenon, statistics show it is still not that popular among New Zealand women.
According to Statistics New Zealand, babies born at home make up just for two per cent of the country's births. However, there are many reasons why some women choose to have babies at home. Some of the advantages with a home birth include being in a familar environment, privacy, emotional wellbeing, immediate bonding time and family involvement.
There are even claims that having a home birth leaves the mother and baby less susceptile to infection and that breast-feeding is easier to establish...
Petra says one of the most important ways to ensure a positive birth experience in any environment is to be prepared physically and mentally.
She recommends a set of resources called The Pink Kit, which helps couples learn birthing skills.
