My girl friend and I prepared for the birth of our child with The Pink Kit. She had had two previous caesareans when previously married. We worked very hard to have a vaginal birth and felt really grateful for the information and skills in the kit. Our dream wasn't meant to be. My wife started to bleed at the beginning of labour and had to have an emergency c/s because the placenta began to separate. We did take it all in stride. We had time to talk and how to change our responses to the situation and which skills we could still use and we did. Sure it wasn't our dream birth but it was a hell of a lot better because we kept using The Pink Kit skills'.

'I felt caught between a rock and a hard place. I supported my wife's decision to have a trial of labour. Our doctor did as well. But he always projected a concern and if his concern eventuated then my wife and child could be in real danger. My mother, of all people, found The Pink Kit. It turns out that there is a group of grandmothers who are giving The Pink Kit to all their pregnant children and grandchildren. They say they wished they had had the information when they were pregnant. I took that as a pretty strong recommendation. My mother had never talked about my birth much. Anyway, it was just what we needed. The kit gave us the skills to work to develop that might shorten my wife's labour and make the birth easier. We talked to our doctor about it but he said that nothing we did could make a difference about the length of labour. That didn't make sense to us. As we worked through The Pink Kit, we both remember how tense she was. It makes such common sense. Anyway, we had a fabulous birth. There is no doubt in our minds that the labour went more smoothly because my wife stayed focused with my help. There is absolutely no doubt that doing the internal work hugely shortened the second stage. We were pretty determined when we did it and left no area inside tender or tight.

'I was sectioned because our first baby was breech. My doctor told me if my next child was head down to go for a trial of labour. Using The Pink Kit built our confidence and we had a plan how to work together. I hadn't had one contraction with my first birth, so I was a second time mum but a first time birthing woman. My husband was absolutely sensational. He loved The Pink Kit. It wasn't mental or emotional, just practical...right up his alley. His enthusiasm and committment had a huge positive impact on my level of confidence. I knew I could relie on him not just to support my choices, but actually help me labour and give birth. He told me that the time we spent before the birth with The Pink Kit and working together meant a great deal to him. He said he felt so loved when he looked into my eyes and could see my trust and appreciation. He said it was like finally finding himself as a husband. There were times I thought I should give up but he was right there, using the directed breathing, making certain I stayed in good positions for the baby and didn't lean over too much. He said he could hear the contractions go right off when I leaned forward. He kept going around the pelvic clock and making certain I always found the most open position. The feedback he gave me helped me to stay on track and focused. The doctor and staff said they had never seen any father so attuned to labour. I'm telling the world what a wonderful man he is'.

'I'm not sure what I thought about this thing called vbac. Personally, from what I had seen at my daughter's birth, I couldn't understand why my wife wanted to go through that pain again. A mate of mine at work... I'm a stevedore... had used The Pink Kit. He had just had a baby and was singing the praises of his wife, his baby and himself. I couldn't even relate to his story. My wife had moaned and groaned and I had felt like I could do nothing but wipe her brow and hold her hand. She actually told me I wasn't much help. But I got brought up in a society where men had nothing to do with birth. My father wasn't at my birth and I don't think my mother would have wanted him to. I'll tell you that if my wife had suggested The Pink Kit, I'd have been real stubborn, but the recommendation came from a good mate. Men do talk about other things besides sex. You should have seen my wife's face when I brought home the kit. You could have scrapped her jaw off the floor. I didn't find it hard going. Not much entertainment, but it's true, take one video section at a time and it all makes sense. I discovered there was more to birth than popping a kid out and could understand the practicality of preparing her body. Until we started doing the work together, I didn't really understand how sad my wife really was. She felt like a failure. She discovered that she had pulled up at each contraction. I had seen that but I thought it was what women do. Now I realise it's what women do when they don't know what to do. Well, that's all I've got to say. Oh, you want to know what happened at the birth? She was a winner!
