' I was 16 when my partner gave birth to our son. We used The Pink Kit. I'd never been around babies much less at a birth. At first I thought this stuff was all for women, though I could feel it in my own body. It wasn"t hard to do, but I couldn’t quite tell when I should use the breathing or hip lift. Anyway, she went into labour and it all fell into place. She knew how to tell me what she needed and I knew what to do. That was neat. She tore pretty badly because we’d only done a little of the internal work. When I saw how tight she stretched, I knew that she would have torn worse if we’d hadn’t done what we had and we sure will do more next time. I’m way ahead of my mates and how they feel as a dad.’

‘Birth just seemed to be about women and how they felt. What about me? My wife wanted me to ‘BE THERE’ and help. Without The Pink Kit, I would have thought to ‘be there’ meant to watch the contractions. No, no, no. It’s about using skills to help her overcome the pain. I actually see pain in childbirth as something different now. Really, no wonder it’s painful, looking at the size of my daughter! It would hurt me too. Afterward, my wife told me how much it hurt but that she knew she could get through it without any pain relief because of ME!’

My partner and I went to the hospital classes and I fell asleep. After they were over I got the impression that my wife would go into labour, feel excruciating pain, that she should immediately use something for the pain and have our baby cut out as fast as possible, then have sore breasts and sleepless nights. Boy, I wasn't looking forward to being a father. My dear lady bought The Pink Kit. She was like a hound dog on a trail, seeking out all the information she could get. 'Read this, read that' she kept telling me. Gosh I'd try, but it all put me to sleep. Then this pink thing arrived. Yeh sure, I thought pink isn't my colour. It took one section of the video to change my mind. By the second section I was hooked. Damn, I had the same body! Anyway, my dear sweet lady led me to a home birth like a gentled bull and we welcomed our precious daughter after a reasonable hard day's work. Fellows, it is hard work. Step up to the plate and help her. She made me so proud how well she managed and she's sure proud of me. Actually, once I learned the skills it was such common sense I wondered why I was so fussed about learning'.

My wife and I are both world class athletes having our first baby. Our midwife gave us The Pink Kit. It was similar to getting in shape so we took to it very easily. I really understood the internal work stuff but it was painful for me to do it on my wife, so we didn't. Boy did we regret it. She tore pretty badly. When the baby was stretching her, she and I just looked at each other. We knew we hadn't resolved how to work together with that part of The Pink Kit. Basically, I was overly keen and too rough. Men, be gentle when you do the internal work until her muscles start relaxing. She'll let you know'.

We were doing fine at home but as soon as we got to the hospital I wasn't certain what I could or couldn't do. Would the midwives think I was foolish breathing with my wife? Did they want to take charge and tell her what to do? We had a period of disorientation. I don't think my wife knew what was expected of her either. After we were checked in and she was examined, the midwife left. We sat there for a while as my wife had one contraction after another and I could tell they were more painful, but I still thought they were going to do something else. Then my wife eyeballed me as if to say: 'what are you waiting for?' I realised that the staff came in and did something then went out. That gave us lots of time to work together. It was great. The first time the midwife came in again, I stopped breathing with my wife. But the midwife told me to continue so she did whatever she had to do while we did what we were doing. The only reason I got into The Pink Kit is that there was a video, not particularly entertaining but certainly informative. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe I, as a man, could feel anything that a woman could feel. The Pink Kit helped me understand that we have the same body. It was easy and boy shifted me. I'll never experience anything like helping my partner give birth. What a rush!'
