'What an incredible relief it was for me to have a wonderful midwife on duty when we came in. Although she didn't know about The Pink Kit, we asked her to remind me about 'The Pelvic Clock' if she saw me tense up in my bum muscles. My husband worked with my breathing...boy, quick labours are challenging! This wonderful woman kept popping in and saying: 'Relax in the Pelvic Clock'. I really responded every time she said that. It wasn't until after the birth that we could explain what it meant'.

I've been a staff ob-rn for many years. I've seen all the trends of childbirth come and go and some we've permanently incorporated into our maternity unit. Birth certainly has changed. But over the past 10 years it's all been going to custard. It seems couples just don't have the same breathing and relaxation skills that I saw in the late 1970s and 1980s. There is certainly more choice and an over abundance of information, but women just don't seem to know how to breathe. In our maternity unit, we've seen a huge increase in c/s. I began to hate going to work. The a few couples came in who really did very well. I asked them and they told me about The Pink Kit. Our childbirth library has several copies and they're always out. It's not out there far enough.'

My husband and I felt overwhelmed by all the choices offered us. I felt I could choose different types of candies: gas, pethidine or an epidural or do it without pain relief. Our doctor was very caring and didn't want me to feel I had to suffer. After all, he said: 'You don't go to the dentist and not use pain relief.' That sort of made sense but didn't either. Anyway, I had no idea what I'd choose. We stumbled through The Pink Kit, but my husband found the video a bit dry. He always wasnt' quite certain how to put it all together. We got to the hospital and they were very busy, 23 women in labour. The staff were running around. We had thought that we'd go hospital and the staff would look after us and help. Well, we were left alone in a room. That woke us up pretty quickly. Actually, all the skills fell into place. My man was great and I loved feeling that I knew what I was doing. The midwife came in as I was pushing. We actually would have been fine delivering our daughter ourselves.'

Whenever an expectant couple who have used The Pink Kit comes into our hospital, I know they will manage their labour well. This has been true even when there has been a need for a great deal of medical care.'
